Trying to salvage some coins from 2013. Core (bitcoin-qt.exe v0.8.1-beta on Windows 8.1) is taking weeks to DL the blockchain as expected but keeps crashing now. Can I upgrade to a newer version without losing what I've gotten already (about 75% complete)?

Currently there are 134305 blocks remaining. When I start it up it works pretty smoothly for a while but then slows down. I leave it running while I'm gone but the last several days when I've come back it has crashed and gives me an I/O error, and I have to hit OK then start it back up. It does appear to be further along when I start it back up but not by a whole lot. So this has really slowed my progress. It's reindexed about 75% though, and so I don't want to start over from the beginning.
The drive it is on has ~400gb of free space so that's not the issue. I have 8gb of memory, and the task manager says bitcoin is taking up about 500mb, but it's using 60-85% of my cpu at a time.
If I download a newer version of core, I can just copy/paste the old wallet.dat file, right? But wouldn't it have to start downloading the entire blockchain again from the beginning? If so, is there any quicker method?
While typing this, it crashed twice. It only runs for about 10 minutes.
The version I have doesn't have any settings I can change. I read that there's a db size limit you can change in later versions that could help. This one does have a "debug window" with a command line console but I don't really know what to do with it. Here is a list of available commands:

Recuperating funds from an old Bitcoin-QT v0.8.06-beta

What are your suggestions on how I can safely and quickly transfer the funds to someplace newer and safer?
I have access to the wallet but the program and blockchain data is outdated (193 weeks behind). The hard drive is from 2009 and there is only 74.5gb free.
Apologies if this isn't the correct subreddit but I am too stoked to think right now.

Importing Wallet.dat into Qt 4.8.3 Bitcoin v0.8.5-beta?

Any old timers here - is it as simple as replacing the default wallet.dat with the one you've got, and loading up the software? I've got a bunch of old wallet.dat files I wanted to look at again and I saved the version of QT from back in the day.
I seem to remember having to run an import command on the debug screen if the dat file was encrypted with a passphrase. Am I remembering correctly? If so do you know the command?
Imprt privky or something like that. Maybe that was only for importing paper wallets into QT .....

How do I update my Bitcoin-QT client from v0.6.3-beta to 0.8.1?

Hey /bitcoin, just as the title states. I don't think I've updated the Bitcoin client before, and I've read around that it must be updated to the latest (0.8.1 if I'm not mistaken) before May 15.
  1. Why is it necessary to do this?
  2. How do I do this? I already have BTC on my account. Won't the installation overwrite my wallet and other files?
Thank you in advance from a somewhat confused bitcoiner.

When ever I try to send coins my client (Bitcoin-qt V.0.6.2 - Beta) freezes up.

I haven't opened my wallet in a long time (apparently 375 days) and to avoid waiting forever for it to catch up with the block chain, I decided to switch over to Electrum. I tried to send my coins but after I clicked send and confirmed, the client just freezes up.

Meta///Bias - make information reliable and easy to consume.

metabias.io
Hey, let us talk about media & information.
News outlets are receiving a lot of hate recently, and not for a lack of reason.
Everybody is trying to push their agenda. VCs shilling for their company, Lobbyist, Left, Right, Pro-Bitcoin, Pro-Gold, Russians, Chinese, EVERYBODY has an agenda.
What about complex topics, expert opinions? They are biased too.
Twitter, Facebook, YouTube’s main KPI is the number of eyeballs on the screen. They will feed you with information you already like and watch most, creating your personal echo-chamber.
Now let us think about the amount of information we deal with. By 2025, it’s estimated that 463 exabytes of data will be created each day globally.
With every major company having access to advanced NLP & Ai tools is using them to hook you up and make you scroll this timeline the whole day. How are we going to navigate through all of that?
It is true that information is essential to our development, both professionally and personally. It is also true that we need different opinions to make sound decisions. We need to include different parties to the dialogue. We need to see the full picture, not a part of it.
So what options do we have? How can we achieve this?
Thanks to technology advancements and communities like ods.ai, Natural Language Processing (NLP) is becoming more accessible than ever. Now we can use it to serve the bright side.
With blockchain, it became easier to use the crowd's wisdom and organize people in a decentralized fashion.
Our vision is to make information reliable and easy to consume. And that is why we created Meta///Bias.
We are releasing our Web-Platform this year and invite you to join us on this journey.
Follow @Meta_Bias or Subscribe to get invited to our closed beta.
E-mail us at [email protected] if you want to be a part of this project. We are looking for Journalists, Content-creators, Ai-Specialist, and everybody who wants to make the media better.

BCH Unlimited Ubuntu PPA repo updated to version 1.8.0

The BCH Unlimited Ubuntu PPA repository has been updated to serve version 1.8.0 is available at:

https://launchpad.net/~bitcoin-unlimited/+archive/ubuntu/bucash

This release is compatible the Bitcoin Cash protocol. To update already installed packages (*):

sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade

To install

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin-unlimited/bucash sudo apt-get update sudo apt install bitcoind bitcoin-qt

starting from this update the repository is serving also ElectrsCash(**) v.1.1.1, for now just for the amd64 architecture. To install it just execute this command:
sudo apt install electrscash

See the official announcement and the release notes for more details:
https://np.reddit.com/btc/comments/g3k4mbch_unlimited_180_has_just_been_released/
https://github.com/BitcoinUnlimited/BitcoinUnlimited/blob/release/doc/release-notes/release-notes-1.8.0.md

Known issues:
On Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) you'll probably get an error while trying to install bitcoind. The error message is the following:
The following packages have unmet dependencies. bitcoind : Depends: libgcc-s1 (>= 3.4) but it is not installable E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Package libgcc-s1 is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
It seems like libgcc-s1 which is a focal (ubuntu 20.04, still in beta) package that has somehow crept in the bionic "food-chain", I'm working on a fix right now. Thanks to xd1gital for the initial report.
Edit: to solve the problem please do:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-test sudo apt update sudo apt dist-upgrade sudo apt install bitcoind

(*) due to fact we rebranded Ubuntua PPA name along with the name of the clients, you will be displayed with this warning and question to which you could safely reply "Yes":
E: Repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/bitcoin-unlimited/bucash/ubuntu bionic InRelease' changed its 'Label' value from 'BU Cash' to 'BCH Unlimited' N: This must be accepted explicitly before updates for this repository can be applied. BittyTax - New open source project for cryptoasset accounting/audit/tax tools

BittyTax
I wrote this code last year to do my own tax return as at the time there was nothing available for UK tax rules. I decided to make it open source here https://github.com/BittyTax/BittyTax.
It’s command line tools only at the moment, but I’m working on next version which will integrate directly into Excel to make it a bit easier to use.
I've done a lot of testing and some friends have used it for their tax returns, but bear in mind it is still in beta.
If you get any problems or there's any feature you would like added, please raise an issue here.
It currently handles these data file formats:
Wallets:
  • Electrum
  • Ledger Live
  • Qt Wallet (i.e. Bitcoin Core)
  • Trezor
Exchanges:
  • Binance
  • Bitstamp
  • Bittrex
  • ChangeTip
  • Circle
  • Coinbase
  • Coinbase Pro
  • Coinfloor
  • Cryptopia
  • Cryptsy
  • Gatehub
  • OKEx
  • Poloniex
  • TradeSatoshi
  • Uphold
  • Wirex
Explorers:
  • Etherscan

(Updated) [Staking] Reddcoin Core client GUI wallet on a Raspberry Pi Model 3B

Intro

This thread is an update to my first Reddcoin staking tutorial that was written 7 months ago.

The reason for the update
My Reddcoin Core software crashed and became unusable. My Raspberry Pi 3B would lag and freeze, I couldn't stake anymore.

Instead of just redoing everything the same way, I wanted to see if I could improve on 3 points:

The updates

If you would like to tip me
Writing a tutorial like this takes time and effort; tips are appreciated. My Reddcoin address: RqvdnNX5MTam855Y2Vudv7yVgtXdcYaQAW.

Overview

Steps

Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Snr5e8bzftI
This video shows how long it takes to start Reddcoin Core.   TL;DR:

Extra

Backup
Backup your wallet to prevent losing the RDDs in your wallet! There are two methods to backup, do both. Make new backups if you create a new receiving address!

Boot with only 1 USB drive plugged in:
Make sure only the USB drive (with the swap partition and data partition) is plugged in when you boot up your Raspberry Pi. This to make sure the swap partition (/dev/sda1) is recognized correctly.   If you boot up with multiple USB drives, Lubuntu might see the USB drive with the swap partition as the second drive (instead of the first drive), and ignore the 2 GB swap partition. If this happens, starting Reddcoin can render the Raspberry Pi unresponsive.

Connection issues If you have issues syncing the blockchain because you have 0 network connections, please follow the instructions in this thread.

Start Reddcoin Core easier
Run a shell script (.sh file), so you can start Reddcoin just by double clicking on an icon on your Desktop.

Minimization options
Adjust minimization options, so you can safely press on the X button (the close/exit button on the upper right corner).

RealVNC VNC Viewer (client) and VNC Connect (server): To remote connect to the Raspberry Pi, I use VNC Viewer ad VNC Connect from RealVNC.

Chromium as browser: The updates break Firefox, the browser crashes when you try to run it. Install another browser, Chromium, to solve this issue.

Updates / Upgrades
If Software Updater shows up and tells you that there is updated software available, do not install the updates using Software Updater. Use LXTerminal to update Lubuntu.
