DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FIAT AND CRYPTO

• Fiat Currency is backed by Governments/Countries itself. What determines the value of a currency is the economic health, demand, growth, political stability to name a few, of the respective country. Before 1930, most fiat currencies were backed by gold and silver.
• Since 1971, U.S. citizens have been able to utilize Federal Reserve Notes as the only form of money that for the first time had no currency with any gold or silver backing. This is where you get the saying that U.S. dollars are backed by the “full faith and credit” of the U.S. Government - quoted in google.com.
• What backs crypto value is purely supply and demand. The demand creation of a crypto is its sole objective. To create demand, the crypto has to have a purpose. And most purpose commonly promoted is utility. The number of ways you can utilize the said crypto. The more utilization factors the more demand there is for it.
• There are other ways to substantiate value of a crypto and that is to back the crypto with a 1 to 1 ratio in assets or in USD. Then the question is, how 3,000 crypto currencies in circulation be monetary eco sustainable? Can anyone imagine walking into McDonald and view a chart of 3,000 different pricing? Which also means the crypto is a payment gateway pegging against USD instead of bearing any true characteristic of a currency.
• A country’s currency is in its own legit form of legal tender, the only currency acceptable under financial sovereigns of a country. People in the world must be made to understand that. Retailers in Thailand cannot put up products price tags in EUROS/USD, it is illegal. It has to be in Thai Baht.
• It is hardly imaginable for everyone in the world to retail with a Crypto-Currencies at a rate of 7 transactions per second. When mining nodes are reduced due to non-performing mining ratio, mining blocks in the Blockchain will significantly be limited too, rendering delays in transactions while usage increases.
• In time to come, as trends of crypto picks up, Thailand can issue BAHT COIN or UK the STERLING COIN, exactly what China wishes to do. Digital RMB, but would such crypto currencies be fully decentralized? We all have our answers. Absurd to even think of producing Thai Baht, Pound Sterling or Chinese Yuan at the cost of electricity. It is currencies in digital forms.
KRATSCOIN is not meant for that purpose. In some opinion, apart from utilization, a crypto can be for safekeeping, an entity for keeping money while allowing easy liquidation, at a click of a mobile button, not to mention sending or transferring without the trouble of going to banks, which was the original purpose of Bitcoin to begin with. Therefore, KRATSCOIN would be better termed as Crypto Commodity, sharing similarities as Metal Commodities.
An individual cannot use gold to make a purchase, neither can one eat gold. It can only be kept or invest in for appreciative value over time. Gold is being exampled for its scarcity which reasons for its higher value over its cousin, silver or bronze. Who or what determines the value of gold? Just like any other crypto, demand by humanity. As in all other commodities, it must also be placed in checks by governments. To put in checks, serial numbers are introduced to protect a country’s commodities outflows or illegal exports.
Humanity made Bitcoin a reality. Acceptance by the majority members of the public made Bitcoin to what is it today with the trust they entrusted it with, or is the majority public hopping on the band wagon to make a few quick extra bucks? Whatever the reasons are, the characteristics of Crypto Currencies are only matched by the behavior of Commodities.
SERIALIZED COINS - WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE PUBLIC: Every currency has its own remarkable name, design and colors. Dollars, Euros, Pound, Tugrik, Peso, Rupee, Rupiah, Dina, Ringgit, Baht and the list carries on. One thing every currency have in common - Serial Numbers.
In any crime, investigators will firstly establish motives and mode of operation, both of which are very likely related to money. So following the money trial is a natural thing to do for investigators/authorities and it has become a common practice. Crimes require funding ie robbers need money to buy guns to carry out its robbing activities. Cutting off financing will reduce criminal activities. That’s the approach governments of the WORLD have adopted for crime fighting.
Perhaps people do not realize this while most do not feel the pinch. Humanity tends to take life for granted until apocalypse happens. Take a minute to visualize the tallest tower in your homeland collapse into a pile of dust with thousands of casualties effecting everything else that comes to mind. Imagine a family member, just 1 is enough, is among those casualties.
• Imagine if monetary system is not in place and drug dealers, among many, roam the earth freely distributing what can be death threatening substance to your kids. What if you are mugged of your inheritance [items left to you by your father] that is beyond retrieval? As for crypto enthusiast, what if your wallet gets hacked as even the mighty Pentagon gets hacked. All the above can go away if the crypto system leaves a trail for hound dogs to sniff out. Money Trail or Serial Codes Trail to be exact.
• Citizens rely on governments and their countries to do what is best for them to lead their daily lives, flourish, advance, improve and strive but at the same time, citizens want to take away the single most important thing deemed crucial in the hierarchy of humanity from governments with additional boastful remarks such as “I transferred $400 million from one corner of the earth to another corner in a single transaction and no governments can do anything about it”.
• In-short, to boast unregulated financial movement is to arrogantly promote crime without realizing it while challenging the world’s monetary authority. Oldest advice in the book teaches us never to pick a fight we can’t win.
• Serial Coded Coins does not take away the financial movement freedom nor does it take away your privacy. It merely provides Authorities the necessary means needed for crime prevention and fighting. It only re-inforce security and safety. SERIALIZED COINS - WHAT IT MEANS FOR GOVERNMENTS: • Governments are relentlessly trying to find new ways to keep track of crypto transactions. Crypto Currency Exchanges, just like all other Financial Institutions and Banks, are required to practice the most stringent Know Your Customer (widely known as KYC) process. The KYC is designed to provide governing agencies and authorities with information pertaining to crypto ownerships.
• But no governments can have information on Peer-to-Peer (also known as P2P) transactions unless the government in question launch a full scale Federal Investigation on certain suspected individuals seeking Wallet Developers to unveil the ownership of certain wallet addresses. Do not forget, National and Global Security trumps Privacy Act. Refusal to co-operate under the pretext of Global or National Security will only result in an out-right ban, which is exactly what happened to Blackberry.
• Questions to Governments – What if Wallet Developers or Crypto Exchanges shuts down which can happen for various reasons be it foul-play, sinister or forcefully under threat? What if servers are damaged and ruined? An EMP strike or a simple magnet can make it happen. Information/identities of suspected customers of such addresses shall be lost forever and along with it the Money Trial.
• The most probable way of evading Authorities with crypto assets are developing an e-wallet for own illicit purpose. Since the cost of developing an e-wallet is relatively low in considerable cost to hiding, what can governments do to flush out these ants from the vast networks of tunnels?
• With Serialized Coded Crypto Assets, it doesn’t matter if servers of Exchanges or Wallets are destroyed. The Serial Codes of each token/coin enables governments of every participating country to track both origin and destination by identifying records of each token/coin in wallet address. It can disappear into a cold wallet but emerging some place later yet Authorities can still detail which particular token/coin has at one moment of time been into which wallet, on what day and date.
• If the battle of financial crimes can be resolved with a simple Serialize Coded Crypto Asset, the eradication of corruptions, money laundering, unlawful proceeds and terrorism financing will be made possible. Criminals can no longer exploit the genius creation of Sathoshi – Blockchain and Crypto-Currencies.
• Global Security, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Money Laundering could just be excuses granting government agencies the need to have access to financial information in the Monetary System. Nonetheless, it is in the interest of every nation that capital outflow is controlled. Capital Outflow is most frequent when the economy of a country is deteriorating. In the face of an economy meltdown, monetary flow is most needed and yet citizens tend to transfer monies further away illegally from their own country in an act of selfishness. This would not be tolerated by any country. Serial Coded Coin shall prove this attempt futile.
• In most part of Asian Countries, many crypto-currency mining operations are carried out illegally. The legality sits on thin fine line where Authorities can pin only stealing of electricity as a major concern to the respective country. Since most Power Companies belongs to the Country in one way or another, it is financially damaging to Power Producers and Utility Suppliers. Serial Codes can determine if the KRATSCOIN is mined legally or illegally making it difficult for miners or mining farms to mine crypto while avoiding making electricity payments. Will this deterrent disrupt the chain of KRATSCOIN supply? That’s not how Blockchain Tech works. TAXATIONS - WHAT IT MEANS FOR PUBLIC AND GOVERNMENTS: • Taxation cannot be imposed on “Illegal & Unlawful Proceeds” instead confiscation is enforced in many countries. Origins or proceeds of Serialized Coded Crypto Assets can be easily identified by the Serial Codes in-conjunction with the Blockchain. This exercise can evidently proof the legitimacy of the aforesaid token/coin. By “Illegal & Unlawful Proceeds” also refers to crypto coins obtained via illegal mining operations.
• Taxation on Crypto Assets are calculated on profits deriving from the sale/disposal of the crypto Assets. If we are small crypto believers, the amount of taxation rendered by Inland Revenue will be insignificant. Why risk Freedom of Life over Freedom of Small Monies. If we are big crypto believers, taxation on Serialized Coded Coins can be considered added security to your assets protection.
• By adopting Serialized Crypto Assets, declaration is made easily possible via proof of token/coin origin via the Blockchain. If the Authorities can know where our crypto assets come from, the Authorities will know where it will disappear to. It is taxation cum insurance in one tiny sum. This added security with freedom feature will encourage self-declarations of crypto assets to Authorities and Agencies. PRIVACY & ANONIMITY: • Many may be skeptical of their wealth being tracked and monitored. But in this era of technological advance society, everything we touches has our signature. Banks, iPhones, Samsung Mobiles, Google, Facebook, Whatsapp, WeChat, LINE, Viber, Facebook, Properties, Utilities. Almost everything. It is to this fact that there is a need for Privacy Protection Act.
• As explained before, Crypto Currency Exchange KYC procedures is designed to expose the identity of Crypto Assets ownership. The Blockchain is supposed to serve as a transparent information platform. The question of privacy over Serialized Coded Coins does not exist, it does not make Serialized Coded Coins ownership any less private.
• Ownership of wallet addresses shall always remain anonymous while the only way Authorities can get to it is through Wallet Developers by virtue of Global/National Security Threats or by a Court Order as per the Privacy Protection Act. SAFETY & SECURITY (CODED CRYPTO VS FIAT + COMMODITIES): • No human mind can memorize the millions of serial numbers printed on fiat currencies. The records of Serialized Coded Coins will forever be in the Blockchain embedded within each transaction from wallet to wallet.
• Serialized Commodities such as gold can be melted down. Diamonds recrafted. Fiat double printed. But not Serialized Coded Crypto Assets.
• Should an accessory system be added into the KRATSCOIN Blockchain, allowing reports on criminal activity be made within the Blockchain, notifying all ledgers of certain stolen Serial Coded Coins, enabling WARNINGS and forbidding next transaction of that particular Serial Coded Coin, wouldn’t this function enhance protection. A theft deterrent function which can never be achieved with physical gold, diamonds or fiat. KRATSCOIN SUMMARY: • Most crypto currencies have not reach a level of security alert for governments. This could be the only reason why a possible ban has not been discussed. China and India has begun efforts to control or ban crypto currencies in their quest to combat capital outflow, writer’s personal opinion. The EU has stopped Libra from implementation. “A company cannot be allowed Authoring Power for issuance of currencies” quoted the governments. KRATSCOIN is fully decentralized with no ownership nor control by any country, company or individual. Once again, the beauty of Bitcoin decentralization concept prevails.
• “There is no such thing as a world currency. However, since World War II, the dominant or reserve currency of the world has been the U.S. dollar” quoted in google.com.
• Most countries have “Foreign Reserves” as backing to a country’s fiat currency. It is a mean of “back up” attempt should all factors above mentioned leading to the value of their currencies collapse. Then what will happen if the Country of the Foreign Reserves collapse?
• Serial Coded KRATSCOIN belongs to no one, no country, no company and therefore theoretically shall not be effected by politics, war or global economy meltdown yet everyone, every country and every government is able to benefit from KRATSCOIN.

Sheet Analogy

In an attempt to understand the difference between a Smart Contract Blockchain Platform and an Extensible Blockchain Object Model Platform we have chosen an analogy, which we believe is widely understood at a high level: That is, Sheets and workbooks as an explanatory model.
For this exercise let’s assume three types of Sheet architectures
  1. Single sheets, external input and references between cells on a single sheet only.
  2. Workbooks with multiple sheets, limited such that all external input and internal sheet references, are within each individual Sheet. No references or relations are allowed between or across multiple Sheet in the workbook.
  3. Workbooks with multiple sheets, both external input and internal references between cells within and across Sheets in the workbook are fully supported.

Bitcoin Blockchain an Example of a Single Sheet

In the first analogy, Single sheets, external input and references between cells on a single sheet only, we have Bitcoin. All transactions happening in the single Sheet are initiated and completed from/to user accounts. A user account is a row in the Sheet. You can only reference different rows within the single sheet.
• A Bitcoin blockchain represented as a single Sheet.
• No explicit account state tracking.
• No asset ownership tracking, only bitcoin transfer transactions
• Any and all “asset” transfers happen outside of the blockchain

Smart Contract Blockchain Platforms (Ethereum) as an Example of a Sheet Workbook

The Second Sheet analogy, Workbooks with multiple sheets, limited such that all external input and internal sheet references, are within each individual Sheet. No references or relations are allowed between or across multiple Sheet in the workbook, represents the Smart Contract Platform: Whereas the smart contract is a separate Sheet within the workbook. Each smart contract Sheet acts somewhat analogous to a standalone Bitcoin Sheet, all contained within one workbook, which is the blockchain. In the Smart Contract model, each individual Sheet may complete only one transaction at a time serially on the underlying blockchain.
Commonly smart contracts are used for tokenization. Each smart contract manages a completely separate and unrelated token. Thus, with the Sheet model, each smart contract is a separate Sheet that manages a single token, keeping track of the accounts and balances. All token transfers are represented as changes in account balances in the smart contract Sheet. Each account can be thought of as a row in the Sheet with its current balance and any other associated data. Again, using the Sheet analogy, all such transactions must be ordered and serialized, as though you were manually entering data and updating a Sheet.
• A smart contract blockchain platform represented as a Sheet workbook
• Each smart contract represented by a separate Sheet
• A single underlying blockchain completes all transactions serially
• Account state explicitly tracked
• A smart contract Sheet tracks a token as single asset
• User accounts contain smart contract token balances or any other assets
  • Only 1 transaction at a time per smart contract

Extensible Blockchain Object Model (“XBOM”) Platform

The DGB is the reference for the third example, Workbooks with multiple sheets, both external input and internal references between cells within and across Sheets in the workbook are fully supported.
In the Extensible Blockchain Object Model Platform we have the blockchain represented as a Sheet workbook with each account as a separate Sheet within the workbook. The Extensible Smart Object Asset (“XSOA™”) Model built on the XBOM evolves the Smart Contract Model from a Sheet as a token smart contract to each account’s Sheet containing multiple assets of varying types represented as Smart Objects™[1] .
The XBOM eliminates the limitations of the Smart Contract Model such that Smart Objects may be referenced across multiple account Sheets. This can be thought of as referencing cells between Sheets in a workbook of Sheets. Each Smart Object is represented as a cell on a user accounts, Sheet which establishes ownership of the Smart Object. A Smart Object can represent virtual assets (e.g. title to property, vehicles, Stocks, Bonds, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) etc.).
Smart Objects are transferred between user accounts. This is analogous to deleting a cell on one Sheet and adding a new cell to another Sheet. Unlike the Smart Contract Model, transactions between accounts do not need to be serialized with a common smart contract account. Perhaps, think of this as several people editing separate workbook Sheets simultaneously on a shared workbook. Provided the editing does not overlap, all edits can be directly merged together.
What this leads to is a global system where all assets are under control of the user account that owns them represented as Smart Objects.
• An extensible blockchain object model represented as a Sheet workbook
• Each user account represented by a separate Sheet
• User accounts contain Smart Objects (assets), analogous to cells in each Sheet
• Transactions are directly between user accounts, analogous to transferring cell contents between Sheet. No smart contract account needed.
  • Multiple simultaneous Smart Object (asset) transactions supported, instead of serialized per smart contract

XBOM- Accounts and Smart Assets Not Smart Contracts
We hope this post visually reveals some advantages enabled in the DGB and XBOM architecture over current approaches taken in the industry. The DGB allows developers to use live code, reducing instances of bugs and malicious code. It creates individual Sovereignty, as all assets are in control of each account on the blockchain. Additionally, DGB reduces time to market for Smart Business to open on the blockchain for services such as exchanges, marketplaces, etc. We look forward to receiving comments on the overview we shared over the previous 5 Medium posts and working with the community on making this project reality.

List of Scott's most influential twitter followers

It seems like Scott/SSC has gotten much more mainstream recognition over the past year, so I was curious to know who the most influential SSC readers are now. Using twitter follower data for this isn't perfect (follower count is not a perfect proxy for influence, not all SSC readers follow the twitter account, etc.), but it's the best I could think of and I figured it would be a fun exercise regardless.
As an aside, a few interesting stats I learned about Scott's twitter followers (scraped on 12/30/17):
  1. Scott is followed by exactly two members of Congress: Justin Amash (Republican) and Jim Himes (Democrat)
  2. Scott has 351 bluecheck followers
  3. Of the top 100 most-followed followers, the gender breakdown (by my count) is 82 men vs 8 women (along with 10 organization or anonymous accounts). Among the top 50, it's 43 men and 1 woman (Liv Boeree)
  4. 385 followers (2% of the total) have bios including either "bitcoin", "ethereum", "crypto" or "blockchain"
  5. There are 67 followers whose bios include either "@Google", "@ Google", "at Google", or "Googler"
Note: When constructing the top 100 below, I excluded accounts that had extremely large Following counts, since I wanted the list to just consist of (likely) actual SSC readers. My exact rule was to exclude any account that follows >20K, include any that follows <10K, and include accounts in the 10K-20K range iff their following/follower ratio was less than 10% (this last condition was mostly just because I wanted to keep @pmarca on the list).
Anyway, below is the top 100. I also constructed lists for Eliezer, Robin Hanson, and gwern, and I can post those in the comments if anyone's interested.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FIAT AND CRYPTO

• Fiat Currency is backed by Governments/Countries itself. What determines the value of a currency is the economic health, demand, growth, political stability to name a few, of the respective country. Before 1930, most fiat currencies were backed by gold and silver.
• Since 1971, U.S. citizens have been able to utilize Federal Reserve Notes as the only form of money that for the first time had no currency with any gold or silver backing. This is where you get the saying that U.S. dollars are backed by the “full faith and credit” of the U.S. Government - quoted in google.com.
• What backs crypto value is purely supply and demand. The demand creation of a crypto is its sole objective. To create demand, the crypto has to have a purpose. And most purpose commonly promoted is utility. The number of ways you can utilize the said crypto. The more utilization factors the more demand there is for it.
• There are other ways to substantiate value of a crypto and that is to back the crypto with a 1 to 1 ratio in assets or in USD. Then the question is, how 3,000 crypto currencies in circulation be monetary eco sustainable? Can anyone imagine walking into McDonald and view a chart of 3,000 different pricing? Which also means the crypto is a payment gateway pegging against USD instead of bearing any true characteristic of a currency.
• A country’s currency is in its own legit form of legal tender, the only currency acceptable under financial sovereigns of a country. People in the world must be made to understand that. Retailers in Thailand cannot put up products price tags in EUROS/USD, it is illegal. It has to be in Thai Baht.
• It is hardly imaginable for everyone in the world to retail with a Crypto-Currencies at a rate of 7 transactions per second. When mining nodes are reduced due to non-performing mining ratio, mining blocks in the Blockchain will significantly be limited too, rendering delays in transactions while usage increases.

These inevitable human emotions, coupled with market fundamentals, help to explain the price dynamics and what we should expect based on the type of emotional phase we project to be in.
In this article, we will attempt to draw some parallels between the chart of Bitcoin and the psychological cycles investors go through as described by Karen Bennett. Let's, first of all, explore the chart below and extract a few insights out of it. It is of cardinal importance to always be reminded that markets go through periods of expansion and contraction, which describes the times where the market alternates between trending in a defined direction and moving sideways. This phenomenon can be extrapolated to multiple facets of our lives (thermal, matter, solid, liquids...).
It is during the periods of most contraction that the majority of the market crowd will leave by selling their holding (weak-handed players) to those that are interested in buying to accumulate at what is perceived as attractive prices. The contraction of the market partly occurs due to the compressive effect of those strong-handed players absorbing selling orders.

Applying Market Cycle Psychology to Bitcoin & Market Cap

By comparing the psychology of market moves and its emotions to the rollercoaster seen in Bitcoin ever since its peak from its irrationally exuberant rally from Dec-Jan, we have taken the initiative to draw what we believe could be some common parallels that may provide some extra insights about the potential market phase we might be at, as perceived by market participants. In our opinion, a period of depression, which leads up to disbelief might be the most accurate terrain we find ourselves at this moment in time, especially after the harsh sell-off resumption seen ever since mid-May.

We can best define this period as the one that sees a consistent loss of hope, with investors no longer expecting a significant upward correction in the near future that may get them out of the deep hole they find themselves in. A significant portion of market participants give up on the idea that their capital has been wisely invested. We seem to have entered a phase where investors aim to save whatever funds left in desperation even if they realize that cutting the losses for whatever capital is left will still represent a major setback.
This phase leads to a potential paradigm shift in their belief about the underlying fundamentals that they first considered so disruptive, or they simply come to the realization that the only reason they invested was out of an adrenaline-led hype vs a proper understanding of the technology and its revolutionary consequences to advance society as we know it. This loss in the overall interest keeps prices at depressed levels, which tends to coincide, at times, with the lowest point in the current cycle.
Stable prices in a compressed range tend to follow, in what might be an arduous and torturous stage lasting quite some time before a new bullish trend re-emerges. Note how the ATR has been consistently compressing since the peak, which suggests we are gradually heading towards the compression phase and point of maximum financial opportunity.

Keep in Mind Return to the 'Mean'

Another critical component to understand is the term "return to the mean". Given that the price of Bitcoin is now way below the most widely followed moving averages (5, 100, 200-Daily Moving Average), one could apply the usefulness of drawing trending lines to estimate where the fair value or mean may be located. Note, different interpretations (lines drawn) should be considered.
By connecting the most number of highs /lows from various price sequences, we come up with at least 3 different trendlines that serve as an estimate to calculate where the market may perceive the mean or fair value of Bitcoin. No one can really tell whether the first green box is the one the market is paying most attention to (follow volumes for valuable tips). However, this exercise helps us determine, from a market cycle/mean reversion standpoint, that the range between $6.5k and $3k appears to be an area where a period of accumulation (perception of value) will most likely occur.

Mean reversion is extremely critical. Over a short span, the markets can behave in such an erratic manner, and anything can happen, however, when we scan the market conditions as part of an extended period of time, which may go from months to years - that's when statistics and certain patterns tend to more accurately play out, with 2 plus 2 more often than not equal 4. Performance that is well above average eventually reverts back to an equilibrium point as it no longer can defy gravity, while performance that is well below average has a tendency to improve.
At CoinLive we are always open for interpretations that can be logically explained and have a mathematical backing. We have been long endorsing the approach taken by the user of BitcoinTalk that goes by the name Trolololo and its logarithmic non-linear mean regression chart. According to the chart below, we might be closer to the upper edge of the $6.5k-$3k range, although as usual, a caveat applies. In the past, the price of Bitcoin has had a tendency to spend significant periods of time in an undervalued area below the mean reversion (red line).

Can we talk about sharding and decentralized scaling for Raiblocks?

Introduction
This essay contains a healthy dose of math sprinkled with opinion, and I would be the first to admit that my math and personal opinions are sometimes wrong. The beauty of these forums is that it allows us to discuss topics in depth, and with enough group scrutiny we should arrive at the truth. I'm actually a cryptocurrency noob; I've only been looking at it in earnest for a few months, but I've seen enough to conclude that we are in the middle of a revolution, and if I don't intellectually participate somehow, I think I'll regret it for the rest of my life.
Here I analyze sharding in a PoS (proof-of-stake) system, and I will show that not only is sharding good, but I will quantify just how beneficial it is to Tps (transactions per second of the whole network) and mps (messages per second processed by each individual node). I use Raiblocks as my point of departure, regarding it as both my inspiration and my object of critique. But much of the discussion should be relevant to any PoS sharded system.
As you may know, Raiblocks does not employ ledger sharding, but seeing as every wallet is already in its own separate blockchain, it's basically already half-way there! From an engineering perspective, sharding is low-hanging fruit for a block-lattice structure like Raiblock's, especially when you compare it to how complicated it is for single-blockchain currencies.
For the record, I think that Raiblocks will scale just fine according to the current strategy laid out by Colin LeMahieu (u/meor) . By using only full nodes and hosting them in enterprise grade servers (basically datacenters), chances are good that the network will be able to keep up with future Tps (transaction per second) growth. Skeptics have been questioning if people are going to be willing to run nodes pro bono, just to support the network. But I don't doubt that many vendors will jump at the chance. If I'm Amazon, and I've been paying 3% of everything to Visa all these years, when there's an option to basically run my own Visa, I take it.
Payment networks like Paypal have been offering free person-to-person payments for years, eating the costs of processing those transactions in exchange for the opportunity to take their cut when those same people pay online vendors like Amazon. This makes business sense because only a minority of transactions are person-to-person anyway. Most payments result from people buying stuff. So, in a sense, vendors like Amazon have already been subsidizing our free transactions for years. By running Raiblocks nodes, they would still be subsidizing our transactions, but it would be a better deal than what they were getting before.
But have we forgotten something here? Is this really the dream of the instant, universal, decentralized, uncensorable payment network that was promised and only kinda delivered by Bitcoin? Decentralization comes in a spectrum, and while this is certainly better than a private blockchain like Ripple, the future of Raiblocks that we're looking at is a smallish number of supernodes run by a consortium of corporations, governments, and maybe a sprinkling of die-hard fans.
You may ask, but what about the nodes run by you and me on our dinky home computers and cable modem connections? Well, people need to remember that Raiblocks nodes need to talk to each other every time there's a transaction, in order to exchange their votes. The more nodes there are, the more messages have to be received and sent per node per transaction. Having more nodes may improve the decentralization, redudancy, and robustness of the network, but speed it definitely does not. Sure, the SSD of a computer running a mock node will handle 7000 tps, but the real bottleneck is network IO, not disk IO, and how many Comcast internet plans are going to keep up with 7000 x N messages per second, where N is the total number of nodes? If you take the message size to be 260 bytes (credit to u/juanjux's packet-sniffing skills), and the number of nodes to be 1000, that's 1.8 GB/s. Also, if you consider that at least two messages will need to be exchanged with every node (one for the sending wallet, one for the receiving), the network requirements per node becomes 3.6 GB/s. This requirement applies to both the download and upload bandwidth, since in addition to receiving votes from other nodes, you have to announce your own vote to all of them as well. Maybe with multicasting upload requirements can be relaxed, but the overall story is the same: you almost want to convince small players not to run their own nodes, so N doesn't grow too large. Hence, the lack of dividends.
So, if we're resigned to running Raiblocks from corporate supernodes in the future, we might want to ask ourselves, why is decentralization so important anyway? For 99.9% of the cases, I actually think it won't matter. People just want their transactions to complete in a low-cost and timely fashion. And that's why I think Ripple and Raiblocks on their current trajectories have bright futures. They are the petty cash of the future. But for bulk wealth storage, you want decentralization because it makes it hard for any one entity to gain control over your money. No government will be able to step in and freeze your funds if you're Wikileaks or a political dissident when your cryptocurrency network is hosted on millions of computers scattered across the internet. I know the millions number sounds outlandish given that Bitcoin itself has fewer than 12k nodes at present, but that's my vision for the future. And I hope that by the end of this essay, you'll agree it's plausible.
The main benefit of sharding is that it allows nodes to divide the task of hosting the ledger into smaller chunks, reducing the per-node bandwidth requirements to achieve a certain Tps. I'll show that this benefit comes without having to sacrifice ledger redundancy, so long as sufficient nodes can be recruited. One disadvantage that must be noted is the increased overhead of coordinating a large number of nodes subscribed to partial ledgers. At the very least, nodes will need to know how wealthy other nodes are for voting purposes. However, I don't see how an up-to-the-second update of nodal wealth is necessary, since wealth changes on the timescale of months, if not years. It should be sufficient to conduct a role call once every few weeks to update nodes on who the other nodes are and to impart information about wealth and ledger subscriptions. Nonetheless, in principle this overhead means it is still possible to have too many nodes even with sharding.
Raiblocks has a unique advantage over single-chain cryptocoins in that each wallet address is already its own blockchain. This makes it especially amenable to sharding, since each wallet can already be thought of as its own shard! You just need a clever algorithm to decide which nodes subscribe to which wallets. For the purposes of this analysis, I assume a random subscription, so that for example if both you and I subscribe to 10% of the ledger, our subscriptions are probabilistically independent, and we intersect on roughly one percent of the total wallet space. I will also assume that all nodes are identical to each other in bandwidth, though in practice I think each node's owner should decide how much bandwidth he is willing to commit, letting the node's software dynamically adjust its P to maintain the desired bandwidth, where P, or the participation level, is the fraction of the ledger that the node is subscribed to. That way, when the Tps of the network increases over time, each node will use the increasing bandwidth demand as a feedback signal to automatically lower its ledger subscription percentage. Then, all that would be missing for smooth and seamless network growth is a mechanism for ensuring node count growth.

From the definitions, it should be apparent that

There are two types of messages that nodes have to deal with, transaction messages and role-call messages. Transaction messages are those related to updating the ledger when money is sent from one wallet to another. For each transaction, each node presiding over the sending wallet/shard will need to
  1. Broadcast its vote to the other R members of the shard. In the normal case this is a thumbs up signal and no conflict resolution is required.
  2. Receive votes from the other R members of the shard
  3. Broadcast its thumbs up to the R members of the receiving wallet/shard
Each node presiding over the receiving wallet/shard will need to
  1. receive thumbs up signals from the R members of the sending wallet/shard
Therefore, on a macro level upload and download requirements are the same. (Two messages sent, two messages received.)
Role-call messages are those related to disseminating an active directory of which nodes are participating in which wallets and information about nodal wealth. Knowledge about each individual node is broadcasted to the network at a rate of k. I think 10-6 Hz is reasonable, for an update interval of 12 days. For each update, all R nodes presiding over the wallet of the node whose information is being shared will broadcast their view of the node's wealth to all N nodes. Therefore, from the perspective on an individual node:
  1. The rate that role-call messages are received is kRN.
  2. The rate that role-call messages are sent is k(# node wallets presided over)N = k(NP)N = kRN.
Again, upload and download rates are the same. Since upload and download rates are symmetric (which intuitively should be true since every message that is sent needs to be received), the parameter mps can be used equally to describe upload and download bandwidth.
(2) mps = 2R(PTps) + kRN,
where the two terms correspond to the transaction and role-call messages, respectively. Using (1), (2) can be rewritten as
(3) mps = 2R2Tps/N + kRN
Here, we see an interesting relationship between the different message categories and the node count. For a fixed ledger redundancy R and Tps, the number of transaction messages is inversely proportional to the number of nodes. This is intuitive. If all of a sudden there are twice as many nodes and ledger redundancy remains the same, then each node has halved its ledger subscription and only has to deal with half as many transactions. This is the "many hands make light work" phenomenon in action. On the other hand, the number of role-call messages increases in proportion to the number of nodes. The interplay between these two factors determines the sweet spot where mps is at a local minimum. Since the calculus is straightforward, I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to show that
(4) N_sweetspot = (2RTps/k)1/2
Alternatively, another way of looking things is to consider mps to be fixed. This may be more appropriate if each node is pegged at its committed bandwidth. Then (3) describes the relationship between the ledger redundancy and N. You may ask how this can be reconciled with (1), which seems to imply that N and R are directly proportional, but in this scenario each node is dynamically adjusting its ledger subscription P in response to a changing N to maintain a constant bandwidth mps. In this view, the sweet spot for N is where R is maximized. Interestingly, regardless of which view you take, you arrive at the same expression for the sweet spot (4).
If N < N_sweetspot, then transaction messages dominate the total message count. The system is in the transaction-heavy regime and needs more nodes to help carry the transaction load. If N > N_sweetspot (the node-heavy regime), transaction messages are low, but the number of role-call messages is large and it becomes expensive to keep the whole network in sync. When N = N_sweetspot, the two message categories occur at the same rate, which is easily verified by plugging (4) back into (3). This is when the network is at its most decentralized: message count per node is low while redundancy is high.
Note that N_sweetspot increases as Tps1/2. This implies that, as transaction rate increases, the network will not optimally scale without somehow attracting new people to run nodes. But the incentives can't be too good either, or N may increase beyond N_sweetspot. Ideally, a feedback mechanism using market forces will encourage the network to gravitate towards the sweet spot (more on this later).
One special case is where P=1 and N=R. This is when the network is at its most centralized operating point, with every single node acting as a full node. This minimizes node count for a given redundancy level R and is how Raiblocks is currently designed. I will show that for most real-world numbers, the role-call term is so small as to be negligible, but the mps is many orders of magnitude higher than in the decentralized case because of the large transaction term.
Assuming that we are able to keep the network operating at its sweet spot, by plugging (4) into (3), we arrive at
(5) mps_sweetspot = R3/2(8kTps)1/2
If instead we plug N=R into (3), we arrive at
(6) mps_centralized = 2RTps + kR2
So, we see that in the decentralized case the mps of individual nodes increases as the square root of Tps, a much more sustainable form of scaling than the linear relationship in the centralized case.
And now, the moment we've all been waiting for: plugging various network load scenarios into these formulas and comparing the most decentralized case to the most centralized. Real world operation will be somewhere in between these two extremes.

Yes, I did sneak a transaction fee in there, which is anathema to the Raiblocks way. But I wanted to incentivize people to run nodes. Observe that income per gigabyte remains the same, independent of network Tps, because both total income and total bandwidth scale proportionally to Tps. The decentralized case has half the income/GB because the role-call overhead doubles network activity. In either case, the income per GB depends on transaction fee and is independent of network load.
An interesting number to check online is the price/GB that various ISP's charge. With Google Fiber, it is possible to purchase bandwidth as low as $0.00076 per GB, meaning that it may be possible for nodes to be profitable even if fees were lowered by another order of magnitude. As time progresses, bandwidth costs will only go down, so fees may be able to be lowered even further past that. But because of electricity and other miscellaneous costs, I think a one cent transaction fee is probably pretty close to what people need to incentivize them to run nodes.
With sharding, even many home broadband connections today can feasibly support 100,000 transactions per second, with each node subscribed to about one ten thousandth of the total ledger and handling about 7 MB/s. Getting 14 million people to run nodes may seem like a tall order, but the financial incentives are there. Just look at all the people who have rushed to do GPU mining. Here, bandwidth replaces hashing power as the tool used for mining.
According to a study done by Cisco, yearly internet traffic is projected to reach 3.3 ZB by 2021. Looking at the table, that means if we ever reach 100,000 Tps, Sharded Raiblocks traffic would be equal to the rest of the world combined. Yikes! But if you think about it, nobody along the way is taking on an unbearable load. Users pay low fees for transactions. Nodes get dividends. ISPs get additional customers. The only ones who lose out are Visa, Paypal, and banks.
With such a large network presence, the cultural impact of this coin would be huge. That, in addition to the sheer number of participants running nodes as side businesses would cement this as the coin of the people.
From a macro level, I see no red flags that would indicate this is economically or technically infeasible. Of course, the devil's in the details so I'm posting this to see if people think I'm on the right track. To me, it seems that the possibilities are tantalizing and someone needs to build a test net to see if this idea flies (u/meor, if any of this sounds appealing, are you guys hiring? ;) ).
